Leidel tallies double-double performance, plus career-high three blocks
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Hailey Leidel turned in her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds as University of Massachusetts women's basketball held off the University of the Incarnate Word, 71-59, on Friday night at the Mullins Center. With the win, UMass improves to 6-4 on the season and the Cardinals drop to 0-10.
Leidel also posted four assists and a career-high three blocks while redshirt freshman Anil Soysal had seven rebounds, an additional single-game best. Sophomore Paige McCormick, making her first start of the season, contributed two steals.
As a team it was a dominant night on the glass for the Minutewomen, who outrebounded UIW by a 47-21 margin. Out of a 13-6 edge on the offensive boards, the Maroon and White outscored the visitors 15-8 on second chance points.
The sides traded buckets to open the night before Massachusetts strung together a 21-5 run and never looked back. It was in part a stout defensive effort that keyed the Minutewomen during the stretch, as UIW shot just 2-of-15 with all five points coming from Imani Robinson. That set the stage for a 39-21 score at halftime in favor of UMass.
Although the advantage would stretch to as much as 23 midway through the third quarter, the Cardinals chipped away well into the final frame and cut the UMass lead to just 10. McCormick then put down a layup in the final two minutes, setting the stage for UIW to foul and send the Minutewomen to the free throw line to seal the victory.
Angelica Wiggins led UIW with 21 points on 7-of-16 from the field and was followed up by Robinson (17 points) and Macy Ray (11 points).
Five days separate the Minutewomen from their next contest, a Wed., Dec. 12 matchup with Boston University at the Mullins Center with opening tip slated for 7 p.m.
