George Powers Minutewomen Over Marist, 70-55

December 29, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Massachusetts caps non-conference schedule with eighth victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts senior co-captain Jessica George had a career-high 22 points, including 18 from beyond the arc, to lead all scorers as the Minutewomen defeated Marist by a 70-55 score on Saturday at McCann Arena. The key win wraps up the non-conference slate at 8-6 for the Minutewomen, while Marist enters play in the MAAC at 8-4.

George added a trio of rebounds in the triumph, while junior and fellow captain Hailey Leidel contributed nine points, 10 boards, two steals and six assists which was one short of tying her career-high. Freshman Destiney Philoxy came off the bench to provide 10 points and was clutch from the free throw line down the stretch.

Leidel's day included the 191st three-point make of her career, tying the Brownstown, Michigan native with former Minutewoman Katie Nelson (2001-06) for the program record at UMass.

Massachusetts trailed for just four minutes, 24 seconds–entirely within the first quarter. The closely-contested stanza saw the sides trade buckets early before the Minutewomen regained the lead for good on a Genesis Rivera layup with 29 seconds left. Momentum carried into the second stanza as the Minutewomen would string together a 20-4 run before taking a 38-26 lead into halftime.

Despite being faced with second half deficits of as much as 17, Marist clawed away down the stretch and was able to get within four points in the final two minutes. But an and-one conversion by Philoxy began a stretch of 11 consecutive Massachusetts points to cap the day and send the Minutewomen back to the Pioneer Valley with the victory in hand.

For the Red Foxes, Alana Gilmer put down a team-high 13 points and was followed by Rebekah Hand with 11 points and eight rebounds.

UMass forced 14 Marist turnovers, while the Minutewomen turned the ball over just nine times.

The Minutewomen open the Atlantic 10 portion of their schedule on Sun., Jan. 6, returning to the Mullins Center for a 2 p.m. game vs. Saint Louis.
