Massachusetts Takes Down Saint Louis, 70-66

January 06, 2019 | Women's Basketball

Atlantic 10 schedule begins with first win over SLU since 2011

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball faced a furious second half rally by Saint Louis, but the Minutewomen finished the day with three double-digit scorers and committed just eight turnovers en route to a 70-66 win on Sunday at the Mullins Center. With the win, UMass is now 9-6 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10. In addition, it marks the first triumph over the Billikens since Jan. 19, 2011, marking the end of a nine-game losing streak.

Senior Jessica George once again led Massachusetts with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, also contributing five assists, three boards and a steal. In tying a career-high with 39 minutes on the floor, George turned the ball over just once. Elsewhere, freshman Asia McCoy put down 14 points plus three dimes and classmate Jessica Nelson matched a career-best with seven rebounds.

After a 12-point, six-rebound day, junior Hailey Leidel moved into 14th on the UMass all-time scoring list with 1,140 points. She needs just four more to tie former Minutewoman Tez Kraft (1994-99) at 13th in program history. Leidel also knocked down a pair of three-pointers to move past Katie Nelson (2001-06) for the program career record (now 193) in that category.

Both teams exchanged baskets early on in the contest before the Minutewomen powered through a 10-2 run to close the first quarter. That included eight unanswered points in the final 6:58 of the period spearheaded by McCoy and Nelson.

In the second stanza UMass swelled its lead to a game-high 12 points on the strength of a Genesis Rivera three-pointer as well as a charge drawn by Rivera at the other end of the floor. SLU closed the half strong, cutting the advantage to just five with the halftime score at 26-21.

The final 20 minutes took on a much tighter nature as eight of the game's nine lead changes came after the break. Both Brooke Flowers and Tasia Jeffries led the SLU effort to chip away with 11 points apiece, but timely UMass buckets down the stretch as well as key free throw shooting helped the Minutewomen come away with the triumph.

For SLU (5-9, 0-1 A-10), Flowers had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, adding four blocks and three assists. The Billikens won the rebounding battle, 37-29, and also had the edge in points in the paint (30-20).

Massachusetts faces its first road test of the league slate on Wed., Jan. 9 with a 7 p.m. game at Dayton's UD Arena.
