Todd’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Northeastern Over Minutewomen, 53-52

McCoy puts Minutewomen ahead with four seconds before NU claims heartbreaker

BOSTON – Northeastern's Shannon Todd hit a right-wing three-pointer as time expired to lift the Huskies over University of Massachusetts women's basketball by a 53-52 score on Sunday at the Cabot Center. Despite being four seconds from delivering the Huskies their first loss, UMass falls to 5-4 while NU is now 7-0.

Freshman Asia McCoy put the Minutewomen on the brink of victory, finishing a perfect pass from junior Hailey Leidel with a layup underneath the basket and a mere 4.4 seconds on the clock. But with both teams out of timeouts, the Huskies immediately rushed back up the floor and found Todd for the game-winning bucket.

Not overlooked was McCoy's first career double-double in the tough setback with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jessica George had a game-high 15 points and sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey put down 10 of her own.

UMass, which led the contest for over 31 minutes, capped a low-scoring first half with a 22-15 advantage and held the Huskies to just 5-of-29 shooting in the stretch, including 18 percent from the field in the opening quarter.

The Minutewomen had a plus-five rebounding margin as the second half wore on, but NU clawed back from fourth quarter deficits of as much as nine to set up a final 60 seconds that were back-and-forth before escaping with the victory.

Northeastern was led by Jess Genco with 14 points and nine rebounds and Ayanna Dublin contributed nine points, nine boards and four assists.

Massachusetts now has five days to prepare for a Fri., Dec. 7 matchup against Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
