Fourth Quarter Run Lifts River Hawks Past Women’s Hoops

December 21, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Leidel inches closer to Massachusetts career record for three-point makes

AMHERST, Mass. – A 13-0 fourth quarter run proved costly despite three double-digit scorers as the UMass women's basketball team fell to UMass Lowell, 62-59, on Friday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Junior Hailey Leidel was once again just short of a double-double with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Destiney Philoxy had 13 on the day and senior Jessica George put down 12 in the setback.

With 12 of her 14 points coming from three-point land, Leidel moved into sole possession of second place at UMass with 190 makes from downtown in her career. She needs a single trey to tie former Minutewoman Katie Nelson (2001-06) for the all-time mark.

Returning from injury, Philoxy added six assists, four rebounds and one block off the bench. Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey pitched in with seven dimes, and three steals, both team-highs. Freshman Jessica Nelson made her first collegiate start and came up with six points, two blocks and seven boards which tied her career-high.

Massachusetts (7-6) had opportunities to tie the score late but a defensive stand by the River Hawks preserved the lead for the visitors. After Leidel knocked down a triple in front of the UMass bench, the deficit moved to 60-59 with 45 seconds on the clock.

Following a stop at the other end, Hampton-Bey came up with a clutch rebound that allowed the Minutewomen to advance the ball with a timeout. But out of the break, Leidel's three-ball from the same spot fell short and forced the Maroon and White to foul and send UMass Lowell to the free throw line. Now needing a triple to send the game to overtime, Hampton-Bey pulled up from beyond the arc but the shot would not go down as time expired.

The contest took on a back-and-forth nature as neither side mustered an advantage of more than seven between five ties and 12 lead changes.

The River Hawks (4-8) were guided by a double-double effort on the part of Brianna Rudolph (22 points, 12 rebounds), while as a whole the squad capitalized on 15 Massachusetts turnovers to generate 24 points.

After a break for the Christmas holiday, UMass returns to the floor on Sat., Dec. 29 with a 2 p.m. game at Marist to wrap up the non-conference schedule.
