North Dakota Edges Women’s Hoops, 59-52

Fighting Hawks close out back-and-forth game with five straight in final two minutes.

AMHERST, Mass. – A back-and-forth game saw North Dakota score five straight points in the final two minutes of play as the Fighting Hawks narrowly defeated the UMass women's basketball team 59-52 on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
 
Hailey Leidel led the Minutewomen (5-3) with 14 points, while freshman Destiney Philoxy netted 12 points.
 
Lexi Klabo led all scorers with 30 points while adding 14 rebounds to lead North Dakota (2-4). Jill Morton also reached double figures with 13 points.
 
The game started with a low scoring first half as both teams went into the intermission tied 18-18.
 
The score remained tied after the third quarter, 38-38. North Dakota started the fourth quarter scoring five straight in just over the first minute of play.
 
A three-point play by Philoxy followed by a Jessica George free throw at the 6:01 mark tied the game again, 45-45. The Fighting Hawks used a 6-to-1 run to build a slight edge with just under four minutes remaining.
 
A three-pointer by Philoxy with 2:03 to go pulled the Minutewomen back within a field goal, 54-52, but North Dakota scored five straight down the stretch to maintain the advantage.
 
UMass will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 2 when the Minutewomen head to Boston to face Northeastern. Tip-off is set for 1 PM.
