Hampton-Bey had 18 points to go with four steals and four boards
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey had 18 points plus four steals, four rebounds and three assists and junior Hailey Leidel had a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) as University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Fairfield, 59-49, on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The win caps the Brown University Turkey Tip-Off and improves the Minutewomen to 5-2 on the season, while Fairfield drops to 2-4. With the conclusion of the tournament, both Hampton-Bey and Leidel were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances over the weekend.
Sophomore Paige McCormick put down 11 points, keyed by a 3-of-6 showing from three-point land, while freshman Asia McCoy contributed five boards.
UMass jumped out to an early first quarter lead and swelled the advantage with a 15-3 run into the second stanza. McCormick swished a triple from the right corner to cap the stretch, forcing Fairfield into a timeout with the score at 19-8 in favor of Massachusetts, just two minutes into the period.
Three of Hampton-Bey's takeaways came after halftime, including one in the third period that set up a beautiful coast-to-coast layup. But the Stags would not go down quietly and cut the UMass lead to as little as three, before the Maroon and White wrapped up the quarter with six straight points capped by a Hampton-Bey bucket.
Fairfield continued to chip away in the final 10 minutes, but effective free throw shooting once into the bonus helped the Minutewomen pull away and seal the victory.
For Fairfield, Katie Armstrong led the squad with 13 points plus seven rebounds.
The Minutewomen now return to the Mullins Center for a Wed., Nov. 28 game against North Dakota which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
