Several Minutewomen post single game career-highs
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball had four scorers in double-figures and five Minutewomen had at least five rebounds in a 90-61 win over Brown on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win improves the squad to 4-2 on the season and Brown drops to 4-3 with the loss.
Junior Hailey Leidel and sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey each had a game-high 18 points and narrowly missed double-doubles with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Redshirt freshman Anil Soysal inked 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and senior Jessica George rounded out the double-figure Minutewomen with 12 points on the afternoon.
Elsewhere around the floor, Hampton-Bey and freshman Destiney Philoxy each handed out five assists, and freshman Jessica Nelson contributed seven points, four boards and three blocks.
Almost immediately after the opening tip, UMass took a lead it would hold for the remainder of the contest. Hampton-Bey hit a jumper in the paint and Leidel sank back-to-back three-pointers, setting the tone for an afternoon in which the visiting side would quickly build up a double-digit lead. Freshman Asia McCoy collected four rebounds on the defensive end, spearheading the effort on the glass with Leidel to open the game.
As the game moved into the second quarter, the Maroon and White continued to press the gas pedal, helped by a 9-of-17 shooting performance. Philoxy put a bow on the half with a long left wing triple as the shot clock expired, putting the score at 40-29 as the teams headed to the locker room.
Coming out of halftime, a pair of fast break layups were beautifully executed by the Minutewomen. With just over seven minutes on the clock, Hampton-Bey grabbed a rebound and connected with George for a bucket. In a near carbon copy of that play, Hampton-Bey made a nice steal and quickly found George for two points with 5:26 left, giving UMass its first 20-point lead at 53-33. A straightaway triple by Hampton-Bey ultimately closed the quarter as well as a 65-second span in which Hampton-Bey had seven points.
The Minutewomen dominated the paint, 48-12 and also received strong contributions from the bench with a 25-4 edge in that category.
For Brown, Shayna Mehta had 18 points, while four different Bears had four rebounds apiece. But Brown was hampered by 19 turnovers which the Minutewomen ultimately turned into 22 points at the other end.
UMass caps the Brown University Turkey Tip-Off on Sun., Nov. 25 with a 3 p.m. matchup against Fairfield.
