Lights Out Shooting Keys Bucknell Past Minutewomen

November 23, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Leidel notches 1,000th career point in 77-58 setback

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball junior Hailey Leidel reached the 1,000-point milestone, but the Minutewomen were defeated by Bucknell by a 77-58 score on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Following the win to open the Brown University Turkey Tip-Off, Bucknell improves to 3-2 on the season, while Massachusetts is also now 3-2.

Leidel is the 20th player in UMass history to accomplish the feat and first since Kim Pierre-Louis tallied 1,099 points from 2011-15.

Helped in part by an 11-of-15 first quarter line from the field, Bucknell finished an even 50 percent (31-of-62) shooting while the Minutewomen were 23-of-59 (39 percent). Sophomore Bre Hampton-Bey had 13 points and freshman Destiny Philoxy put down 11 on the night, while Leidel grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Hot three-point shooting propelled the Bison to an early double-digit lead that they would not relinquish. Abby Kapp bookended an 11-2 game-opening run with a pair of triples, finishing the first period with 11 points. In the second stanza the teams traded buckets and shot over 46 percent as Massachusetts worked to cut into the Bucknell advantage. However, it would be the Bison that carried a 46-33 score into the locker room at halftime.

Leidel would hit the 1,000-point mark in the fourth quarter, taking a pass in the low post from freshman Jessica Nelson before putting down a jumper from the left block and drawing a foul in the process. Although the Minutewomen continued to chip away into the final 10 minutes, the game was sealed when the Bison went on a 13-0 run that spanned over five minutes.

For Bucknell, Kapp carried the load with 19 points while Kaitlyn Slagus had a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Kyi English contributed 14 points plus seven assists.

Massachusetts continues the Brown University Turkey Tip-Off on Sat., Nov. 24 with a 2 p.m. game against the host Bears at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
