Minutewomen Power Through Hadley Chase

October 13, 2018 | Rowing

Eighteen teams competed and a sizable crowd turned out in spite of rainy conditions

HADLEY, Mass. – University of Massachusetts rowing powered through a rainy Saturday on the Connecticut River and hosted a total of 18 programs as the Minutewomen held the second annual Hadley Chase Regatta. Despite the conditions, all races went off as scheduled before a packed crowd surrounding the UMass Rowing Boathouse and along the Norwottuck Rail Trail Bridge.

"It was a good start today with a lot of competition," said head coach Jim Dietz. "I think it went pretty well and our younger boats did really well. For the fours to finish where they finished I thought that was pretty good as well. This time of year you're working on everything."

UMass started off the morning at 8:34 a.m. with the singles. Aiste Balciunaite clocked in a first place time of 19:20.8 while Riley Anderson tabbed second at 20:34.5. After Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island snagged third (20:44.4), Laurel Fournier finished fourth at 20:50.4.

In the doubles, Isabel Grant and Melissa Dexter were first across the line at 18:05.0, more than 30 seconds ahead of the next crew. Caroline Gosnear and Caroline Garvey posted a time of 18:38.5, good for fourth place.

Massachusetts entered two boats in the pairs, and finished seventh (J. Carter/C. Ricciardi; 19:52.8) and eighth (O. Kelley/E. Fiore; 20:36.6).

In the varsity four, the last race before the morning break, the UMass 'A' crew coxed by Emily Christensen finished fourth (17:31.6) before the Minutewomen also locked up sixth (17:46.3), seventh (17:46.8) and 14th (18:45.5).

Led by coxswain Anne Madeiros, UMass' second varsity eight turned in a time of 16:16.2, eight seconds off of fourth place Dartmouth and a spot in the V8 dash that followed. In an odd twist thanks to Mother Nature, as the regatta came to a close, so too did the rain, finally bringing some sunshine to the Connecticut River during the post-regatta awards ceremony.

The Minutewomen now prepare for the 54th Head of the Charles Regatta next weekend in Boston on Oct. 20-21. For complete Hadley Chase results, click here.
