Men's Lacrosse Continues Partnership With Vs. Cancer Foundation

October 11, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse continues its partnership with the Vs. Cancer Foundation and is actively fundraising throughout the fall season in support of the pediatric oncology unit at the Baystate Medical Center and fund groundbreaking brain tumor research efforts through the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

"We are thrilled to again be partnered with the Vs. Cancer Foundation in raising awareness and funding for the fight against childhood cancer," head coach Greg Cannella said. "This is our sixth year working with the Vs. Cancer Foundation and we are so thankful to see how many NCAA programs have joined us in this and made the annual Lacrosse Vs. Cancer fundraiser so impactful nationwide. The donations raised will support local and national efforts, and we are hoping to be able to spend time with those this funding goes to support of at the Baystate Medical Center this year."

Those who wish to donate to the UMass Men's Lacrosse Vs. Cancer Fundraiser can do so here.

Funding raised will be split evenly between the Baystate Medical Center pediatric oncology unit and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The team will mark the fundraiser's efforts following its 10 a.m. scrimmage at Rutgers on Sat., Oct. 13, as the Scarlet Knights also participate in the Lacrosse Vs. Cancer endeavour each year.

"We are so grateful for the tireless efforts of the UMass men's lacrosse team," Vs. Cancer Foundation Campaign Manager Tom Carmean, a 1987 University of Massachusetts alumnus and four-year letterman for the program, said. "They are helping us care for families, pave the way for better treatments and fight to find a cure. With the support of this incredible team, we're fighting for futures for these kids."

Massachusetts, the first collegiate men's lacrosse program to join the Vs. Cancer Foundation's fight against pediatric cancer, is in its sixth season fundraising for Vs. Cancer's initiatives.

The program's individual Vs. Cancer Foundation fundraiser is part of a larger Lacrosse Vs. Cancer effort, which features programs from all NCAA divisions collectively working toward a goal of $150,000 raised. Massachusetts is currently second in the team-by-team fundraiser standings with more than $7,000 raised as of Wed., Oct. 10.

Vs. Cancer was founded in 2012 by Chase Jones, a former collegiate baseball player at the University of North Carolina. Jones was diagnosed with a brain tumor as a freshman at UNC and the support of his teammates during treatment was his largest source of strength during recovery. Vs. Cancer now works with athletic teams across the country who have joined the fight against childhood cancer. With the help of athletes, teams and communities nationwide, Vs. Cancer has raised more than $4.2 million since its inception and is now a signature fundraising campaign for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
