Hot Start Paces St. Bonaventure Over Women’s Hoops, 69-59

January 06, 2018 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen finish with strong fourth quarter but are unable to overcome slow start

OLEAN, N.Y. – An 18-7 fourth quarter Massachusetts run was not enough to overcome an earlier double-digit St. Bonaventure lead as the Bonnies defeated UMass, 69-59, on Saturday at the Reilly Center. Hailey Leidel had a team-high 20 points and Vashnie Perry, making her first start with the Minutewomen, put down 18 of her own on 7-of-12 shooting including 13 in the final 10 minutes.

UMass shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) on the day, boosted by a 52.6 percent effort in the fourth quarter. St. Bonaventure was and even 39 percent (23-of-59) on the day, paced by Mariah Ruff's 24 points with 18 coming from beyond the arc.

Maggie Mulligan grabbed 12 rebounds and Leah McDerment dished out six assists, each of which led both teams.

After UMass trimmed a seven-point first quarter deficit back to just one on the strength of Leidel and Jessica George, Bona closed the period with a 5-0 run constructed by Rhianna Council and Ruff. By the 5:33 mark of the second stanza, that sequence would double, giving the Bonnies a double-digit advantage after holding UMass without a field goal for over seven minutes of game time. However, the game remained far from out of reach with SBU taking a 32-22 lead into halftime.

Ruff banked a quick pair of triples out of the break, setting the tone for the home squad to swell its advantage to 22 by quarter's end.

A strong 10-minute performance to wrap up the contest helped the Minutewomen close the gap back to eight at 67-59, but the early start by St. Bonaventure proved too much to overcome in the end. Both Perry and Leidel combined for UMass' final 15 points.

SBU forced 19 UMass turnovers on the day, generating 26 points as a result.

Saturday's loss drops the Minutewomen to 8-8 on the season and 0-3 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure is now 6-10 and 1-2 in conference games.

Massachusetts has seven days to prepare for its next matchup, a Sat., Jan. 13 contest against Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
