Mulligan, Hampton-Bey post career-bests in setback
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts freshman Bre Hampton-Bey downed a game-high and career-best 26 points and Maggie Mulligan contributed seven blocks to reset her top single-game mark, but Saint Joseph's countered with five double-figure scorers en route to an 84-79 victory over UMass on Saturday at the Mullins Center.
Hailey Leidel added 16 points, while Mulligan and Paige McCormick chipped in 11 and 10, respectively, in addition to each grabbing five rebounds. Hampton-Bey dished out eight assists, tying an additional single-game career-high.
Massachusetts took great advantage of its opponent's turnovers, forcing St. Joe's into 17 on the day and generating 21 points at the other end. The Hawks, however, had the overall advantage on the glass by a 41-24 rebounding margin.
Despite shooting nearly 50 percent (30-of-61) from the field, Massachusetts was limited to six free throws in the second half after going to the line 11 times in the first and second quarters. The contest took on a back-and-forth nature for the first 20 minutes of play before SJU outscored the Minutewomen 25-12 in the third quarter and gained a lead it would not relinquish.
St. Joe's went 47.7 percent (31-of-65) shooting including a whopping 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the field in the third period.
A quick 6-0 run for the Maroon and White marked a strong finish to the first quarter, after which UMass trailed by only one at 18-17. The stretch concluded with a well-executed layup by Hampton-Bey, who drove down the right lane for the basket and two points. Leidel and Mulligan each nailed a pair of free throws earlier in the sequence.
The Minutewomen received strong production from the bench in the second quarter in part from Genesis Rivera and McCormick, who posted a combined 4-of-4 clip from the field and put down 11 points in the period. A highlight of a 15-5 UMass run midway through the stanza included a nice backcourt steal by Leah McDerment who quickly found McCormick for a jumper to her left. UMass' 29 points in the second quarter were the most the Minutewomen have scored in a quarter during the conference portion of the season and sent the squad into halftime with a 46-40 in hand.
After a relatively back-and-forth start to the third quarter, St. Joe's turned the tables in their favor with a 12-2 run that gave the Hawks the lead for the remainder of the day. Six Hawks had at least three points in the frame, led by eight from Adashia Franklyn.
In the final 10 minutes of the contest UMass fought to chip away, but the damage done in the third was too much to overcome.
Chelsea Woods posted a double-double performance for St. Joe's with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Alyssa Monaghan hit five of her six baskets on the day from 3-point land en route to matching Woods' 19 points. SJU recorded assists on 27 of its 31 field goals for the day.
Saturday's loss drops the Minutewomen to 8-9 on the season and 0-4 in the Atlantic 10, while SJU is now 9-8 overall and 4-1
