January 06, 2018 | Hockey

Freshman Philip Lagunov notched his first collegiate goal for the Minutemen in the loss.

LOWELL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey fought back to tie the score after an early 2-0 deficit, but UMass Lowell went on to out-score the Minutemen, 6-1 the rest of the way as UMass fell to the River Hawks, 8-3 at Tsongas Center on Saturday night. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 9-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in Hockey East play, while UMass Lowell improves to 12-9-0 overall and 8-6-0 in league action.

A breakaway goal by John Edwardh, with assists from Connor Wilson and Tommy Panico, put UMass Lowell out in front, 1-0, 4:28 into the first period.

The River Hawks pushed the advantage to 2-0 at the 11:17 mark. Off a faceoff win to start a UMass Lowell power play, Tyler Mueller fired a shot past sophomore Ryan Wischow from the right point.

UMass cut its deficit in half at 13:47 of the first period. Sophomore Niko Hildenbrand redirected in a Jake Horton shot from the blueline after Horton received the puck from sophomore Jake McLaughlin.

Midway through the second period, the Minutemen tied the score at 2-2 with a power-play goal. Freshman Philip Lagunov cleaned up a loose puck for his first collegiate tally with Hildenbrand and junior Austin Plevy earning the assists 8:09 into the stanza.

UMass Lowell pulled back in front by one in the final minute of the frame, though. Off a faceoff win by Charlie Levesque, Ryan Dmowski rifled a shot past Wischow from the top of the faceoff circle at the 19:26 mark.

The River Hawks then opened up the third period with a pair of special teams' goals with Ryan Lohin scoring shorthanded at 1:42 and Chris Schultz converting on the power play at 8:59 to bring the score to 5-2.

Freshman Mitchell Chaffee buried a one-timer on the power play at the 10:13 mark from Horton and freshman Oliver Chau to pull UMass back within two at 5-3, but UMass Lowell was quick to respond as Levesque poked the puck home 12:50 into the frame to regain the three-goal cushion.

The River Hawks capped the scoring with empty net goals from Colin O'Neill and Ryan Lohin at 17:53 and 18:19, respectively.
UMass out-shot UMass Lowell, 29-22 in the contest and went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the River Hawks were 2-for-4.

The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 12, when the squad travels to Vermont to begin a two-game series against the Catamounts at 7 p.m.
