No. 19/18 Massachusetts Hockey Drops Non-League Matchup To Northeastern, 4-1

October 17, 2026 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – No. 19/18 Massachusetts hockey pulled level with Northeastern in the second period, but the Huskies converted on a 5-on-3 to net the eventual game winner and skated past the Minutemen, 4-1 on Saturday at the Mullins Center. The setback leaves UMass at 2-3-1, while Northeastern improves to 2-1-0.

"It's really tough to earn sweeps in this league," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "One team goes home angry, shows up to play hard the next night. One doesn't and that was the case tonight. Give Northeastern a lot of credit. They came out, played very hard. Our first 10 minutes were unacceptable, and we give them a give them a goal early, and then I thought we started playing well last half of the second period, and then discipline became a major issue. We took seven penalties tonight. We didn't take a single major penalty last year, and we took one tonight, and that gave them the game-winning goal. We're a young team that makes young mistakes like that, an undisciplined team, which is different than last year. We've been the least penalized team in this league three of the last four years, I believe, and seven penalties against, and they score two power-play goals. Poor start, poor discipline, and not enough energy to compete against a good Northeastern team tonight."

The Huskies opened the scoring 4:49 into the first period, with Miguel Marques redirecting Giacomo Martino's shot from the left faceoff circle off a feed from Tyler Fukakusa.

UMass came up with the equalizer at the 11:32 mark of the second period. Freshman Jasper Kuhta and junior Francesco Dell'Elce sent the puck around the perimeter on the power play down to sophomore Gavin Cornforth at the near post. Cornforth tucked it under netminder Sam Caulfield for his second of the weekend.

The Minutemen took a minor and a 5-minute major concurrently, resulting in a 5-on-3 for the Huskies and they managed to convert with Jacob Mathieu and Martino setting up the Amine Hajibi score at 14:54.

Northeastern added some insurance with another power-play goal midway through the third with Dawson Sharkey burying a one-timer from the slot from Fukakusa and Joel Kjellberg at 10:32.

The Huskies capped the scoring with a Jack Pechar empty net goal from Marques and Jordan Tourigny 18:13 into the final frame.

Northeastern ended the night with a 38-35 shot advantage and went 2-for-6 on the power play, while UMass was 1-for-7.

Ethan Eskit totaled 34 saves in net for the Minutemen and Caufield finished with 34 for the Huskies, as well.

UMass will be back in action next Saturday, October 24, when the squad will play host to Stonehill at 6 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
