AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Jack Galanek and never trailed on the way to a 5-3 victory over Stonehill on Saturday night. The win moves the Minutemen to 3-3-1 overall, while the Skyhawks drop to 3-2-0.
"I thought that was a solid win against a good Stonehill team that was 3-1-0 and had been playing well," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We led the whole way through. It's good to see the power play score a couple goals. I'd like to see us be a more disciplined team and get back to where we were last year. Our young guys weren't great tonight, but it was great to see (Tobias) Trejbal getting in the net and looking comfortable, way more comfortable than he did his first game. But I'm proud of that win. The guys fought hard against a good team."
Stonehill began the night on the penalty kill after a protocol violation to start the game. Just seven seconds after that penalty elapsed, Leo Chambers was whistled for slashing to send UMass back to the man advantage. Sophomore Gavin Cornforth collected the puck from freshman Jasper Kuhta and found Galanek in front for the quick wrister that put the Minutemen on the board at the 3:46 mark.
The Skyhawks leveled the score at 1-1, 9:04 into the opening period as Dimitry Kebreau cleaned up a rebound from Luke Lepper and Zachary Aben with a backhander past goaltender Tobias Trejbal.
However, before the first intermission, junior Francesco Dell'Elce put UMass back on top for good, knocking down a Stonehill clearing attempt down along the half wall that he turned and flung past Mason Vaccari at 16:22.
Sophomore Václav Nestrašil then made it a two-goal advantage just 45 seconds into the second period, finishing off a crisp tic-tac-toe play from senior Jack Musa and Galanek on the rush.
The Skyhawks pulled back to within 3-2 with a power-play goal from Aben at the 4:23 mark, but the Minutemen responded with a power-play goal of their own at 7:02. Nestrasil collected his second of the game by redirecting a Musa shot at the top of the crease. Freshman Maxim Massé earned the secondary helper on the play.
Stonehill remained within striking distance of UMass, making it a one-goal game once more, just before the second intermission. Liam Fitzpatrick collected a feed from Kebreau and Justin Gibson in the neutral zone and split the Minutemen defenders to fire a wrister inside the far post at 18:25.
The score remained 4-3 until the final minute of regulation when Galanek sealed the win with an empty net goal from Musa and sophomore Landon Nycz at 19:24.
Galanek ended the contest with two goals and an assist, Musa had three helpers and Nestrašil posted his second multi-goal game in the past three contests.
UMass out-shot Stonehill 44-29 and went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Skyhawks were 1-for-4.
Trebjbal finished with 26 saves in his first collegiate win, while Vaccari turned aside 39 for Stonehill.
The Minutemen will return to action this Thursday, October 29, when the squad will open a home-and-home against Harvard in Cambridge at 7 p.m.
