Mulligan records 28th career double-double in setback
AMHERST, Mass. – Maggie Mulligan contributed a double-double performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs, but a fast start at both ends of the floor gave Richmond momentum as the Spiders topped the UMass women's basketball team, 51-39, on Wednesday at the Mullins Center. The game was played before a Field Trip Day crowd of 2,512.
Hailey Leidel and Leah McDerment each trailed Mulligan with nine points apiece, while McDerment also handed out five assists. Jessica George and Paige McCormick each grabbed three steals.
The Spiders set the tone early with a 12-2 opening run, a window that ended with a Bre Hampton-Bey layup at the 1:34 mark of the first quarter. Massachusetts would counter the stretch with five unanswered points of its own, but Richmond's Kailyn Fee banked a three-pointer at the buzzer that extended the Spiders' lead back to eight at 15-7.
Coming out of halftime UMass was highlighted by nine points from Mulligan in the third quarter, but a strong showing by the visitors swelled Richmond's lead to a game-high of 21 with 5:35 on the clock. For the remainder of the period, the sides exchanged buckets before heading into the final stanza with a 44-27 score in favor of the Spiders.
Massachusetts did string together a 7-2 run in the middle stages of the fourth period, but the earlier damage done by Richmond was too much to overcome.
The Maroon and White shot 16-of-48 (33.3 percent) on the day in comparison to Richmond's 17-of-55 (30.9 percent) clip. However, the Minutewomen faced difficulty from the field in the first half, making just 5-of-28 attempts (17.9 percent) in the first 20 minutes.
UMass falls to 10-12 on the season and 2-7 in the Atlantic 10 with the result, while Richmond improves to 9-14 and 4-6 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen play the middle contest of a three-game homestand on Sun., Feb. 4, welcoming La Salle to the Mullins Center for a noon matchup.
