Big Second Quarter Helps Women’s Basketball Past La Salle, 69-66

Three Minutewomen turn in double-figure scoring efforts

AMHERST, Mass.Maggie Mulligan posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead University of Massachusetts women's basketball to a 69-66 victory over La Salle on Sunday at the Mullins Center.

The triumph improves the Minutewomen to 11-12 on the season and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10. La Salle falls to 7-16 overall and 2-8 against league opponents.

Hailey Leidel had a team-high 21 points on 8-of-17 and as a team the Minutewomen committed just eight turnovers on the day. Collectively, UMass shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the field in comparison to a 40.7 percent (24-of-59) effort from La Salle. The Maroon and White also held the rebounding advantage, 42-33.

The start of the game belonged to the Explorers after putting together a 7-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 15-8 lead. UMass would claw back within five by quarter's end at 23-18.

Leidel was instrumental in a 17-2 run stretching over roughly seven minutes in the second stanza. Three-point shooting proved key during the stretch as the Minutewomen went 3-of-4 from downtown, capped with 5:16 on the clock when Leah McDerment found Genesis Rivera in the right corner. That put Massachusetts ahead 29-26 and gave the squad a lead it would ultimately keep for the remainder of the day.

The Explorers valiantly battled in the second half and were within as little as one point in the final seconds of regulation. After Shalina Miller made a pair of free throws with 38 seconds on the clock, Leidel responded with a jumper inside 10 seconds. That gave UMass a four-point advantage and appeared to seal the deal, but Adreana Miller put down a straightaway triple with a second to go, moving the score to 67-66.

After the Minutewomen used their final timeout, Mulligan was fouled and made both free throws with just two-tenths of a second left on the clock to seal the victory.

Not to be lost in the final result is that UMass was complemented by 19 points from Bre Hampton-Bey (10) and Rivera (9) after coming off the bench.

Miller led all scorers with 23 points in part helped by a 5-of-13 showing from beyond the arc.

UMass closes out a three-game homestand on Wed., Feb. 7 with a 7 p.m. matchup against Dayton from the Mullins Center.
