Hockey Nipped By No. 16 Boston College, 2-1

January 23, 2018 | Hockey

Freshman John Leonard scored his sixth of the season for the Minutemen in the setback.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – University of Massachusetts pulled level with No. 16 Boston College early in the second period, but BC regained its advantage late in the frame and went on to edge the Minutemen, 2-1 on Tuesday night at Conte Forum. The loss leaves UMass at 11-12-1 overall and 5-8-1 in Hockey East play, while the Eagles improve to 12-9-3 overall and 12-4-0 in league games.

"I thought the first period we were very fortunate to come away only down by a goal," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "That was easily our worst period of hockey this year. The problem with my team, being as young as we are and lacking leadership and veteran players, is that we come into places like this with good hockey teams and we're a little too respectful. We didn't compete one ounce in the first period. We adjusted a little bit and I thought we competed a little better the rest of the game. The second period was much better, allowed us to get back into the game, but tonight we looked like a young team. The first period was men against boys and we shot ourselves in the foot with the turnover for their second goal. As a coach, I'm not really happy with my group tonight. We somehow made the game close, but we could've been a lot better."

Boston College opened the scoring 12:17 into the first period. Jesper Mattila rifled a shot from the high shot into the back of the UMass net on the power play after receiving the puck from Connor Moore and Christopher Brown.

The Minutemen managed to tie the score at 1-1, 4:07 into the second. Freshman John Leonard cleaned up a rebound off a Brett Boeing shot for his sixth tally of the season after freshman Mario Ferraro carried the puck up the ice.

BC responded, however, to take a 2-1 lead late in the frame. Logan Hutsko capitalized on a UMass turnover and flung a shot under the crossbar at the 14:48 mark.

Neither team would score in the third. The Minutemen pulled netminder Matt Murray for an extra attacker with 50 seconds to play in the period.

The Eagles finished the contest with a 30-21 shot advantage and went 1-for-2 on the power play, while UMass was 0-for-2. Murray totaled 27 saves for the Minutemen and Joe Woll had 20 stops in net for BC.

UMass will be back in action this Friday, Jan. 26, when the squad will open a two-game set against Maine at home in the Mullins Center at 7 p.m.
