No. 8/9 Northeastern Skates Past Hockey, 5-0

January 20, 2018 | Hockey

The Minutemen will be back in action on Tuesday at No. 16 Boston College.

BOSTON – In the second game of a home-and-home series against No. 8/9 Northeastern, University of Massachusetts hockey was shut out 5-0 at Matthews Arena on Saturday night. With the loss, the Minutemen are now 11-11-1 on the season and 5-7-1 in Hockey East play, while Huskies improved their record to 15-6-3 on the year and 11-4-1 in the league.

"Obviously a hungrier Northeastern team tonight that raised their level and my team, for the first time in a long time, didn't have a lot of energy tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We've been playing a tough road schedule since we've been back and the timing of their first goal, an unfortunate pop off of Mario Ferraro's stick in the corner that allows them to score right away, is tough on the road, but we showed resiliency. I think we had two breakaways after that, chances to tie the game, but the backbreaker was the goal the first shift of the second period. After that, our guys mentally probably thought it was a little too much to overcome. Our energy level dipped and that's the first time I've seen that out of my team in a long time, but it's not too unexpected with the amount of travel that we've had and the amount of games we've had here."

The Huskies struck just 31 seconds into the first period, as sophomore center Biagio Lerario took advantage of a Minutemen turnover and found Dylan Sikura in the slot, whose wrist shot beat freshman Matt Murray on the blocker side. It proved to be only tally of the period as Northeastern would go on to outshoot UMass 11-7 in the first frame.

In what was an almost identical start to the second period, Huskies' forward Nolan Stevens was able to find the back of the net 46 seconds in to the stanza to give Northeastern a two-goal cushion. Stevens outlasted UMass defenseman Jake McLaughlin in a 1-on-1 battle before converting against Murray on his short side.

Stevens found his way onto the score sheet once again and extended the margin to 3-0 for the Huskies at the 17:07 mark of the middle period. With assists from Dylan Sikura and Adam Gaudette, Stevens' shot from the right hash mark found its way into the top right corner.

Northeastern bolstered its lead to 4-0 midway through the third as John Picking connected with Brandon Schultz on a cross-crease feed with 11:26 remaining in regulation.

The Huskies added another goal at the 12:30 mark of the third as Stevens completed his hat trick on the power play.

The Minutemen went 0-for-3 on the power play on the night, while the Huskies converted one of five chances with the man advantage and outshot UMass, 37-19. Murray turned aside 28 for the Minutemen over 55:29, while freshman Brad Arvanitis played the final 4:12 in net for UMass and made four saves. Northeastern goaltender Cayden Primeau logged 19 saves for the shutout.

The Minutemen return to action Tuesday night, Jan. 23, for another Hockey East battle at No. 16 Boston College at 7 p.m.
