Chaffee posts first career multi-goal game, Murray picks up second shutout of the season vs. the Huskies.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey celebrated its return to the Mullins Center by blanking No. 8/9 Northeastern, 3-0 in Hockey East action on Friday night. The Minutemen improved to 11-10-1 on the season, 5-6-1 in league play following the squad's first home game since Dec. 1. With the loss, the Huskies sit at 14-6-3 on the year and 10-4-1 in Hockey East.
"Very proud of my team tonight," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "We've won a fair number of games this year, but this and the win over Providence I think are the two highlights up to this point. The thing I liked about tonight was I saw our team mature pretty quickly. We had a very specific way we wanted to play tonight and we challenged our guys to rise to that level and they did. They did an excellent job."
After a scoreless first period which saw Northeastern out-shoot UMass, 15-7, but with limited chances, the Minutemen's offense started to buzz midway through the second. Freshman Mitchell Chaffee ultimately broke up the scoreless deadlock 11:19 into the period, redirecting home a shot from the point by junior Ivan Chukarov after freshman Jake Gaudet sent the puck up the wall.
Chaffee converted once more on UMass' five-minute power play at the 15:52 mark, driving in a one-timer at the doorstep off a feed from freshmen John Leonard and Oliver Chau.
Junior Austin Plevy capped the scoring 3:23 into the third as he finished off a drive to the net by freshman Mario Ferraro. Sophomore Jack Suter earned an assist on the play, as well.
The Minutemen ended the contest with a 32-29 shot advantage and went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Northeastern was 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Murray totaled 29 saves in his second shutout of the season, while Cayden Primeau had 29 stops for the Huskies, as well.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow night, Jan. 20, meeting in an 8 p.m. contest at Northeastern to close out the series.
