Former Bowdoin All-American rejoins Fran O'Leary on the pitch.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer head coach Fran O'Leary has announced the addition of Ben Brewster to the program's coaching staff. Brewster joins the Minutemen as an assistant coach following a stint as head coach at The Bay School of San Francisco and brings a diverse background of collegiate and professional playing experience.
"I am delighted to welcome Ben to UMass," said O'Leary. "He possessed great leadership abilities as a player and has all the tools to become an outstanding coach."
Brewster served as head coach for The Bay School of San Francisco for the boy's varsity soccer program in 2016, helping the team to a 9-9-2 record, as well as their first North Coast Section (NCS) playoff appearance since 2012.
Prior to being head coach for The Bay School of San Francisco, Brewster was the head coach of the San Francisco City FC for the boy's 2015 soccer team. He also coached in 2013 at the New England Soccer Academy.
While coaching, Brewster captained the San Francisco City FC of the United Soccer League Premier Development League (USL) during the 2016 season. He played for the Tulsa Roughnecks of the USL in 2015 where he started 19 of 23 matches. In the 2013-14 season, he competed for the Seacoast United Phantoms of the USL Premier Development League. He served as captain of the Phantoms and led the team to a Northeast Division Championship.
As a starting defender for Bowdoin College from 2010-2013, Brewster competed in all 66 games. During the 2012 and 2013 seasons, he was named captain. He was honored twice as the Most Valuable Player (2012, 2013) and helped the team to a NCAA Final Four appearance in 2010. He earned All-American accolades as a senior and was recognized throughout his career as one of the top defenders nationally.
Brewster, who also played lacrosse collegiately, graduated from Bowdoin in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in history. He originally hails from Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
