Baseball Falls in Final Two Games at URI, 6-0 and 3-1

May 07, 2017 | Baseball

KINGSTON, R.I. – Playing the continuation of game two and the entirety of game three, University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its final two games at Rhode Island on Sunday, 6-0 and 3-1 as URI completed the series sweep. UMass is now 12-28 on the year and 6-12 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams move to 28-16 and 16-4 in conference action.

UMass led game three, 1-0 after sophomore Cooper Mrowka homered to center in the top of the fourth. However, Rhode Island answered with a home run of its own from Mike Corin in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up at 1-1 and snap a streak of 27 straight shutout innings for Minuteman starter Mike Geannelis.

The Rams went on to plate two more runs in the eighth on an RBI single from Chris Hess and a solo home run by Matt O'Neil.

Geannelis suffered the loss (5-5) on the mound for UMass, throwing his fourth straight complete game and surrendering three runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Vitaly Jangols earned the victory (6-1) for URI, limiting the Minutemen to one run on five hits over eight innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

Prior to the series finale, UMass and Rhode Island played the remainder of game two on Sunday afternoon. Before the game was suspended in the sixth inning on Saturday due to rain, the Rams jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a three-run home run by Corin in the bottom of the first. O'Neil increased the margin to 4-0 with a solo shot to left center in the third and URI went on to add two more runs via an RBI single from Kevin Heiss in the sixth and an RBI double from Mike Foley in the eighth.

Senior Ryan Moloney took the loss (0-2) in the contest, going 5.2 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Nick Johnson registered the win (3-3) for the Rams, retiring all four batters he faced, including three strikeouts.

UMass will be back in action next Friday, May 12, when the squad will open up its Atlantic 10 series at Fordham with a 6 p.m. start for game one.
