Baseball Splits Twinbill at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball split its doubleheader at Fordham on Friday, defeating the Rams, 3-0 in the opener behind a complete game shutout from sophomore Justin Lasko before falling in game two, 10-2. Following the split, the Minutemen are now 13-29 overall, 7-13 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams sit at 23-23 on the season and 8-11 in conference action.

UMass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth of game one after senior Dylan Morris led off with a single to left, was sacrificed over to second and scored when senior Mike Geannelis reached on an error.

In the fifth, junior Keith Linnane opened up the inning with a single to right and later crossed the plate on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Ryan Lever to push the advantage to 2-0.

The Minutemen added their third run in the top of the eighth. Lever reached with a one-out double to left center and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Geannelis.

Lasko limited Fordham to just seven hits en route to the win (3-6) and struck out seven without walking a batter. Jimmy Murphy took the loss (5-7) for the Rams, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over nine innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

In game two, Fordham began the contest by scoring four runs on five hits over the first two innings.

UMass took one of the runs back with a home run by senior Jon Avallone in the top of the third, his fourth of the season, but Fordham proceeded to break the game open by scoring four more in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-1 lead.

The Rams pushed the margin to 9-1 in the fourth on an RBI double from Brian Goulard before the teams traded runs in the fifth to cap the scoring. Sophomore Alec Norton singled to center and later came in on a single up the middle by Morris for UMass' second run of the contest.

Senior Ryan Moloney suffered the setback (0-3) for the Minutemen, surrendering four runs on five hits over 1.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout. Brandon Martin picked up the win (4-1) for Fordham, holding UMass to two runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

The teams will close out the weekend series on Sunday, May 14, with game three beginning at noon at Houlihan Park.
