AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its Atlantic 10 series opener at Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon, 5-0 at URI's Bill Beck Field. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader after being rained out on Friday, but game two was suspended due to rain in the sixth inning with the Minutemen (12-26, 6-10 A-10) trailing the Rams (25-16, 13-4 A-10), 5-0.
Rhode Island opened the contest with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Foley legged out an infield single and, with two away in the frame, Matt O'Neil homered to right center.
The Rams added another run in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Jordan Powell led off with a single to center and was sacrificed over to second, setting up an RBI single through the left side by O'Neil.
In the sixth, URI capped the scoring with two more runs courtesy of RBI singles from Sonny Ulliana and Powell.
UMass tallied five hits in the contest, including a double by senior Dylan Morris.
Sophomore Justin Lasko started on the mound for the Minutemen and took the loss (2-6), allowing five runs on 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings. Rhode Island starter Matt Murphy earned the victory (5-2), limiting UMass to four hits over seven scoreless innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.
