Baseball Falls in Extras at Fordham, 5-4

BRONX, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball erased a 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead the ninth, but Fordham rallied to defeat the Minutemen in the 10th, 5-4 in the series finale between the squads. Following the loss, UMass is now 13-30 overall, 7-14 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 24-23 and 9-11 in league action.

Senior Jon Avallone led off the game with a home run to give UMass a 1-0 lead, but Fordham responded by scoring three in the bottom of the second. Luke Stampfl led off with a double down the left field line and came home on an RBI single by Jasoj Lundy. Ryan Mahoney followed with a two-run homer that put the Rams on top.

The Minutemen took one of the runs back in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Cooper Mrowka drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double to left center by senior Dylan Morris before scoring on a wild pitch.

UMass then tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth. Freshman Eddy Hart led off with a single through the right side, stole second and came home on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Ryan Lever.

In the top of the ninth, the Minutemen climbed in front 4-3 after Lever drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over to second and scored an RBI single to left center by freshman Nolan Kessinger.

The Rams tied the score, though, in the bottom of the ninth. Matthew Kozuch doubled to right center and came in on an error. Fordham went on to plate the winning run in the 10th with a walkoff single from Kozuch.

Senior Mike Geannelis pitched all 9.2 innings for UMass and took the loss (5-6), allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Alvin Melendez earned the win (3-0) for Fordham, letting up one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings of relief.

The Minutemen will be back in action on Tuesday, May 16, when the squad returns home to host Fairfield in a 3 p.m. contest at Earl Lorden Field.
