Baseball Walks Off vs. Fairfield for Stone’s 750th Win
May 16, 2017 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. – After trailing 5-2 heading into the ninth, the University of Massachusetts baseball team rallied for three runs to force extra innings and walked off with a 6-5 victory over Fairfield in the bottom of the 10th. The win, which marked UMass head coach Mike Stone's 750th of his career, moves the Minutemen to 14-30 on the season, while the Stags fall to 28-21.
Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after three singles and a bases loaded walk to Dylan Reynolds forced in the run.
UMass tied the score in the fourth as sophomore Ryan Lever sent a leadoff triple into the left field corner for the Minutemen's first hit of the contest and came in on an RBI groundout by senior Mike Geannelis.
The Minutemen climbed in front, 2-1 in the seventh. Dylan Robinson opened up UMass' trip to the plate with a pinch hit single up the middle and moved to third following a bunt single and a sacrifice before scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Dylan Morris.
However, the Stags capitalized on a UMass miscue in the eighth to build a 5-2 advantage. After an error with a pair of runners aboard loaded the bases and extended the inning, Kevin Radziewicz and Tyler Gambardella drove in two runs apiece with a double and a single, respectively.
The Minutemen answered, though, by tying the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth. A double by junior Brett Evangelista, a walk to junior Andrew Noonan and a single up the middle by freshman Eddy Hart loaded the bases with no outs. Evangelista scored on a fielder's choice ground ball and a walk to Lever forced in Noonan before Hart came in for UMass' fifth run on a wild pitch with two away.
Then in the 10th, sophomore Logan Greene was hit by pitch, moved to second on a balk, went to third on a bunt single by Evangelista and came home on a single to center by Noonan.
Freshman Christian Rosati picked up his first career win (1-2) in relief for the Minutemen, pitching a scoreless 10th, allowing just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts. Bobby McNiff took the loss (1-2) for Fairfield, surrendering one run on two hits without recording an out.
UMass will be back in action on Earl Lorden Field on Thursday, May 18, when the squad will open up its Atlantic 10 series vs. Davidson with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
