Baseball Topped by Harvard, 7-3 in Beanpot First Round
April 05, 2017 | Baseball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its first round Beanpot matchup at Harvard by a 7-3 margin on Wednesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field. Following the loss, the Minutemen (6-14) will face Northeastern in the Beanpot consolation game at Fenway Park on April 19, while the Crimson (11-12) move on to take on Boston College for the tournament title.
With one swing of the bat and a 3-1 count, senior Jon Avallone put UMass on the board by leading off the first inning with a home run to left.
Harvard responded, though, scoring five runs on five hits in the third to climb on top 5-1. Trent Bryan and Patrick McColl drove in two apiece in the frame with a double and a triple, respectively.
The Minutemen took one of the runs back in the top of the fifth. Freshman Nolan Kessinger opened the inning with a single down the left field line and moved to third following a walk and a fielder's choice ground ball before crossing the plate on an infield hit by sophomore Alec Norton.
UMass then closed the gap to two, scoring again in the sixth. Senior Mike Geannelis roped a one-out double into left center and came home on Kessinger's RBI double with two away.
However, the Crimson pushed the lead back out to four with a two-run bottom of the seventh. Quinn Hoffman plated Josh Ellis with a double to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan.
Freshman Carter Knapek took the loss (0-1) in his first collegiate start for the Minutemen, allowing five runs on five hits over three innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Grant Stone picked up the win (2-2) for Harvard, letting up one run on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts over three innings.
UMass finished the contest with seven hits, led by Kessinger's 2-for-4 day at the plate with a double and RBI and a run scored.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Friday, April 7, when the squad is scheduled to make its home debut with the Atlantic 10 series opener against VCU set for a 3 p.m. start at Earl Lorden Field.
