Baseball Drops Home Opener to VCU, 8-0

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball and VCU were locked in a pitchers' duel heading into the eighth inning before the Rams broke the game open with six runs in the frame to defeat the Minutemen, 8-0 in the squad's home opener on Friday at Earl Lorden Field. The loss leaves UMass at 6-15 on the season, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams improve to 17-13 on the year and 6-1 in league action.
The first hit of the game for either side came in the top of the third as Steven Carpenter led off the inning with a home run to left center to give VCU a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Rams pushed the margin to 2-0. Daane Berezo dropped a one-out single into right and Alex Gransback drove him in with an RBI double to right center.
VCU's bats came alive for six runs on six hits in the eighth, with 11 batters going to the plate to help the squad build its 8-0 advantage.
The Minutemen had just two baserunners in the contest, a leadoff single by senior Mike Geannelis in the fifth and a two out-single by senior Jon Avallone in the sixth.
Sophomore Justin Lasko took the loss (1-3) for UMass despite seven strong innings. He surrendered eight runs, five earned on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 7.1 innings of work. Rams' starter Sean Thompson collected the win (5-2), limiting the Minutemen to two hits over seven scoreless with no walks and four strikeouts.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, April 8, with game two of the weekend series set for a 1 p.m. start at Earl Lorden Field.
