Baseball Drops Game Two to Dayton, 7-2

April 29, 2017 | Baseball

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball held an early 1-0 lead, but Dayton put up the next seven runs in the contest to hand UMass a 7-2 setback at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 11-24 overall and 5-9 in the Atlantic 10, while the Flyers move to 14-28 on the year and 4-10 in conference action.

UMass began the day by scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Ryan Lever knocked a two-out solo home run over the right field fence to give UMass an early advantage. It marked Lever's fourth home run of the season, a team high.

Dayton tied things up at 1-1 in the third when Brantley Johnson threaded an RBI single inside the left field to drive in Robbie Doring.

In the fourth inning, the Flyers took a 3-1 lead. With one out, Brandon Smith put Dayton in front with a solo home run to left field and a Takahiro Yamada sacrifice fly later in the frame plated Tate Hagan.

The Flyers added three more runs in the top of the fifth. An infield single, walk and a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with no outs. Two sacrifice flies and a wild pitch brought in three Flyer runs to push the margin to 6-1.

Johnson picked up another RBI with a single in the sixth inning that once again brought in Doring for Dayton's seventh and final run.

The Minutemen completed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth as freshman Eddy Hart drove in senior Dylan Morris, who had reach on an error, with a two-out single to right center.

Senior Ryan Moloney started for UMass and took the loss (0-1) after allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits over 4.2 innings with one walks and three strikeouts. Dayton starter Austin Cline picked up the win (4-5), holding the Minutemen to two runs on eight hits over the course of 8.2 innings and struck out eight with two walks.

Lever finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, accounting for two of the Minutemen's seven hits.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow, April 30, with the series finale between UMass and Dayton set for a 12 p.m. start on Earl Lorden Field.
