Geannelis Hurls Gem, Pitches Baseball Past Dayton, 3-0

April 30, 2017 | Baseball

AMHERST, Mass. – Behind a stellar pitching performance from senior Mike Geannelis, University of Massachusetts Baseball blanked Dayton in the series finale, 3-0, at Earl Lorden Field on Sunday. The win moves the Minutemen to 12-24 on the year, 6-9 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Flyers fall to 14-29 and 4-11 in conference action.

Geannelis faced just one batter over the minimum in his second straight shutout on 84 pitches, allowing only three hits, all singles. He matched his career high in strikeouts with nine and did not walk a batter to improve to 5-4 on the season. The right-hander is the first UMass hurler to toss consecutive shutouts since Matt Torra did so in a pair of seven-inning contests in 2005 against St. Bonaventure and Temple.

UMass opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as senior Jon Avallone led off with a double to right center and moved over to third on a sacrifice before coming home on an RBI single by sophomore Ryan Lever.

The following inning, sophomore Alec Norton increased the Minutemen's lead to 2-0 with a two-out solo home run, his first of his career.

After a 1-hour, 30-minute rain delay, UMass added its third and final run in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Brett Evangelista led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a passed ball before scoring on Lever's second RBI single of the game.

Dayton starter R.J. Wagner took the loss (2-4), allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over two innings of work.

Six Minutemen combined for the squad's eight hits in the contest, with Lever and Norton both going 2-for-3 at the plate on the day.

UMass will be back in action on Tuesday, May 2, when the team will wrap up its current home stand by hosting Hartford for a 3 p.m. contest.
