Home Runs Lift Dayton Past Baseball, 5-2
April 28, 2017 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball held an early 1-0 lead, but a pair of Dayton home runs made the difference in the contest as the Flyers defeated UMass, 5-2 in the teams' series opener at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 11-23 overall and 5-8 in the Atlantic 10, while the Flyers move to 13-28 on the year and 3-10 in league contests.
UMass began the day by scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Senior Jon Avallone singled to right, moved up to second on a sacrifice and went to third on a passed ball before coming home on an RBI single to left center by senior Mike Geannelis.
Dayton tied things up at one in the fourth when Brandon Smith knocked a one-out solo homer over the fence in right center.
After UMass escaped a two on, no-out jam in the top of the seventh, the Flyers broke through to climb in front with one swing of the bat in the top of the eighth. A single, hit batter and a walk loaded the bases for Robbie Doring who came through with a grand slam.
The Minutemen completed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore Cooper Mrowka reached on an error and crossed the plate after a pair of wild pitches.
Sophomore Justin Lasko started for UMass and took the loss (2-5) allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Dayton reliever Tyler Henry picked up the win (3-1), holding the Minutemen to one unearned run on one hit over three innings and struck out one without walking a batter.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, April 29, with game two of the weekend series between UMass and Dayton set for a 1 p.m. start on Earl Lorden Field.
