Batting Practice
- Massachusetts baseball takes on Connecticut on the road Tuesday at 3 p.m., before heading to Boson to face off against Northeastern on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a Beanpot Consolation game at Fenway Park.
Recap in a Minute
- The Minutemen took on Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis this past weekend, taking one of three games. The Billikens won games one and two by scores of 8-1 and 8-4, respectively. Game three was highlighted by a UMass walk-off win. Down to its final strike, the Minutemen rallied for back-to-back RBI singles to take the series finale, 5-4.
- Mike Geannelis was awarded the win improving his record to 3-4. Seven different Minutemen recorded a hit, while six had two hits. Dylan Robinson had two RBI, while Cooper Mrowka also had two RBI including a solo home run to left center in the 4th inning, his third of the season.
Scouting Connecticut
- Connecticut (19-14, 6-3 AAC) was most recently in action on Sunday, losing 6-5 in a 12-inning series finale against Tulane. The Huskies were swept in the three-game series, moving them down the American Athletic Conference standings and into second place. UConn will take on Quinnipiac on Monday before facing off against the Minutemen at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
- With 42 hits and 33 RBI on the season, sophomore catcher Zac Susi (.328) has powered the Huskies offense through there 33 games so far. His 42 RBI lead the team, while he also paces the Huskies with nine doubles, and is tied or the team lead with two triples and two home runs.
- On the mound, freshman LHP Mason Feole (5-0) has dominated from the starting role this season. Over the course of eight starts and 49.1 innings pitched, Feoloe holds a 2.39 ERA with 18 walks and 47 strikeouts. Opponents are batting only .229 against him.
- Jim Penders is now in his 14th season directing the Huskies baseball program. A four-time conference Coach of the Year, Penders has overseen one of the most successful stretches in the 120-year history of UConn baseball. In 13 seasons as head coach for the Huskies, Penders has had a total of 39 players either drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs.
Scouting Northeastern
- Northeastern (16-16, 9-3 CAA) was most recently in action this past weekend for a conference series against the College of Charleston. The Huskies swept the series by scores of 6-3, 4-3 and 6-3. Northeastern and UMass were scheduled to face off early this season on March 28th, however the game was postponed.
- Junior Max Burt has been a leader of the NU offense, batting .356 after starting all 32 contests. With 42 hits and 13 doubles, he leads the team in both categories. He is trailed by Nick Fanneron (.333), Zach Perry (.324), Cam Hanley (.320) and Mason Koppens (.311) are the other Huskies batting above the .300 mark.
- Brian Rodriguez (3-1) has paced the Husky pitching staff, posting a 0.51 ERA through his 13 appearances over 17.2 innings. From the starting position, Brian Christian (5-0) leads the team with 45 strikeouts in 48.0 innings pitched over the course of ten appearances and six starts.
- Northeastern alum Mike Glavine is now in his third season at the helm of the NU baseball team after serving the program for eight seasons in an assistant capacity. During his second season at the helm in 2016, Glavine led Northeastern to its fifth 30-win campaign (31) in program history, improving his first-season win total by six victories.
Walk Off to Remember
- Game three against Saint Louis this past weekend came down to its final strike. The Minutemen rallied for back-to-back RBI singles to take the series finale, 5-4. This was the first walk off win for UMass this season.
- During the 2016 campaign UMass had two walk off wins, the first against Central Connecticut and most recently against George Mason. The 2016 MVP John Jennings drove an RBI up the middle in the 10th inning to bring in the winning run against Central Connecticut last April. Current sophomore Cooper Mrowka, led UMass to a 2-1 win with an RBI single in last year's series opener vs. George Mason.
Beanpot Update
- University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its first round Beanpot matchup at Harvard by a 7-3 margin on Wednesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field. Following the loss, the Minutemen will face Northeastern in the Beanpot consolation game at Fenway Park on April 19, this Wednesday, while the Crimson move on to take on Boston College for the tournament title.
Getting It Done In The Classroom
- Eight members of the UMass baseball team were recognized last month for their academic success with placement on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll. In total, UMass as an institution had 165 student-athletes earn a spot on the list.
- Casey Aubin, Brett Evangelista, Kevin Hassett, Matt Hosman, Justin Lasko, Bryce Maher, Cooper Mrowka and Dylan Robinson, garnered the laurels for UMass baseball.
Set in `Stone'
- The winningest head coach in team history, UMass skipper Mike Stone embarks on his 30th season directing the Minutemen baseball program. In the summer of 2016, Stone announced that he would retire from coaching following the 2017 season. During his career in Amherst, Stone has helped UMass to 688 victories with eight Atlantic 10 regular season championships, along with two A-10 postseason titles and two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Nearly 40 of his former players have gone on to play professional baseball.
Nine is Fine
- Throughout the 2017 season, the Minutemen will play in nine different states: North Carolina, Florida, Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New York. So far, UMass has played in six of these states.
On Deck
-This weekend the Minutemen travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for an Atlantic 10 conference series against the La Salle Explorers. The games are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday. UMass returns home on Wednesday to face off against Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. The team them stays at home for a series against the Dayton Flyers. The games are set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
