Baseball Falls to Saint Louis, 8-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Saint Louis used a six-run fourth to defeat University of Massachusetts baseball, 8-1, and clinch the series between the squads at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon. The setback leaves the Minutemen at 7-20 overall, 2-6 in the Atlantic 10, while the Billikens improve to 21-10 on the year and 5-4 in conference action.
The teams were scoreless into the top of the fourth when Saint Louis broke the game open with six runs on six hits and two errors in the frame, sending 11 batters to the plate. A two-run double from Devin Mahoney put the Billikens on the board, while Trent Leimkuehler added two more with an RBI single up the middle. After Leimkuehler scored on an error, Nick Reeser made it a 6-0 margin by driving in Aaron Case with a single through the left side.
Two more runs came in for the Billikens the following inning as Cole Dubet dropped a two-out, two-run single into right field to expand the lead to 8-0.
The Minutemen broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Eddy Hart led off with a single up the middle, went to second on a ground ball and crossed the plate on a single up the middle by sophomore Ryan Lever.
UMass totaled seven hits in the contest, with doubles from senior Jon Avallone and sophomore Cooper Mrowka. Mrowka finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
Freshman Brooks Knapek started for the Minutemen and took the loss (2-3) after surrendering six runs, four earned, on eight hits over 3.2 innings and walked two. Saint Louis' Miller Hogan improved to 6-0 on the year after limiting UMass to five hits over six scoreless innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Minutemen will wrap up their series vs. Saint Louis tomorrow, April 15, with game three set for a noon start on Earl Lorden Field.
