April 13, 2017 | Baseball
AMHERST, Mass. – A late six-run rally proved to be the difference as University of Massachusetts baseball dropped its series opener to Saint Louis, 8-4 at Earl Lorden Field on Thursday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 7-19 (2-5 A-10) on the season, while the Billikens move to 20-10 (4-4 A-10).
UMass scored three runs over the course of the first three innings to build an early lead. Senior Jon Avallone led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side and later scored on a Ryan Lever RBI groundout. In the second, freshman Nolan Kessinger drew a walk and eventually came around to score on a two-out single to right center by sophomore Alec Norton.
Mike Geannelis doubled to right center with one out in the third and the next batter, sophomore Cooper Mrowka, drove him in with an RBI single up the middle, improving the Minutemen's advantage to 3-0.
Saint Louis took one of the runs back in the top of the fourth. After back-to-back singles by Nick Reeser and Parker Sniatynski opened the inning, a double play ball off the bat of James Morisano put the Billikens on the board.
Saint Louis went on to rally for six runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to pull in front, 7-3. A two-run single from Alex King tied the score at 3-3, while Devin Mahoney drove in the go-ahead runs with a double to right. Trent Leimkuehler's sacrifice fly capped the scoring in the frame.
UMass closed the gap to 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Brett Evangelista doubled to left and scored on a two-base error on the play.
The Billikens took the run back, though, with Morisano coming home on an error in the top of the ninth after leading off the inning with a single.
Evangelista ended the day 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while Geannelis finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and a double. The pair combined for six of the Minutemen's nine hits in the contest.
Sophomore Justin Lasko started the game for UMass and took the loss (1-4), tossing 6.1 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Mahoney earned the win (4-0) in relief for Saint Louis, working 2.2 innings and allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Minutemen will be back in action tomorrow, April 14, when the squad will play host to Saint Louis in game two of the squads' Atlantic 10 series at 1 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
