Baseball Edged by Morehead State in 10 Innings, 6-5

April 01, 2017 | Baseball

MOREHEAD, Ky. – University of Massachusetts baseball scored five runs in the top of the fifth, but Morehead State countered with six unanswered to edge the Minutemen in 10 innings, 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Allen Field. With the setback, UMass falls to 6-12 on the year, while the Eagles move to 21-6.

UMass built its lead by scoring five runs, all with two outs, in the top of the fifth to break up a scoreless deadlock. Junior Brett Evangelista walked to extend the inning and the next batter, sophomore Ryan Lever, drove him in with a double to left center. Senior Mike Geannelis belted a two-run homer to put the Minutemen up, 3-0, while three straight singles by sophomore Cooper Mrowka, freshman Nolan Kessinger and senior Dylan Morris yielded two more runs.

In the bottom half of the inning, Morehead State got on the board when Trevor Snyder drew a leadoff walk and later came around to score on a two-out RBI single by Reid Leonard.

After an error extended the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles plated three via a sacrifice fly an RBI double and an RBI single to pull within 5-4.

Then, down to its final out, Morehead State managed to tie the score at 5-5 in the ninth. Michael Patrick singled with two away before being lifted for a pinch runner Tyler Niemann, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Will Schneider drove him in with a single to left and force extra innings.

In the 10th, pinch hitter Jimmy Wright drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Jake Hammon later scored the winning run on a two-out single by Leonard.

Freshman Brooks Knapek was stellar in his start, allowing just one earned run on six hits over seven innings with three walks and nine strikeouts but received a no-decision. Junior Kevin Hassett took the loss (1-2), allowing two runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout over 1.1 innings of relief. JC Hatcher tossed the final 2.1 innings scoreless and struck out two to collect the win (2-1) for the Eagles.

UMass pounded out 12 hits in the contest, led by Kessinger (3-for-5), senior Jon Avallone (2-for-5), Lever (2-for-4) and Morris (2-for-5).

UMass and Morehead State will close out their weekend series tomorrow, April 2, at noon in Morehead, Kentucky,
