March 04, 2017 | Baseball
ELON, N.C. – Despite 10 strikeouts for freshman left-hander Brooks Knapek in his collegiate debut, University of Massachusetts baseball was unable to plate a run on six hits, falling at Elon, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Following the setback, the Minutemen are now 0-2 on the year, while the Phoenix moves to 5-6 overall.
Elon began the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the first by Joe Satterfield to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
The Phoenix added another run in the third when Hayden Platt followed a leadoff walk by Liam O'Regan with an RBI double down the left field line.
Elon capped the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. A walk to Platt, sandwiched between two strikeouts for UMass hurler Connor Donahue set up back-to-back two-out singles that yielded the Phoenix's third run.
The Minutemen had runners reach third in the first and again in the fourth, but were unable to get on the board. Junior Brett Evangelista registered a pair of singles and sophomore Cooper Mrowka picked up his third double in two games to begin the year.
Knapek took the loss (0-1) for the Minutemen, working six innings in his start and surrendering two runs on four hits and walking three in addition to his 10 Ks. Robbie Welhaf tossed eight scoreless innings en route to the victory (2-1) for Elon, scattering five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
