Baseball Drops Heartbreaker at Morehead State, 7-6

MOREHEAD, Ky. – University of Massachusetts baseball took a 6-2 lead into the ninth, however Morehead State managed to score five runs in its final trip to the plate to defeat the Minutemen in walk off fashion, 7-6 on Friday evening. The loss leaves UMass at 6-11 on the season, while Morehead State improves to 20-6.
UMass began the contest with a 5-0 lead, scoring five runs on four hits, all coming with two outs in the top of the second. Senior Mike Geannelis led off the inning with a double and classmate Dylan Morris drove him in with a single to left. Back-to-back walks to junior Keith Linnane and sophomore Alec Norton loaded the bases for senior Jon Avallone, who sent a two-run single into left. Norton then scored on an error and junior Brett Evangelista plated Avallone with an RBI single.
The Eagles took two of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Hunter Fain came home on a double play ball after reaching with a single and Ryan Kent knocked in Braxton Morris with an infield hit with two away.
In the fourth, the Minutemen pushed their lead to 6-2. Avallone drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over to second and scored on an RBI single to right center by sophomore Ryan Lever.
However, Morehead State managed to rally for five runs in the ninth. Niko Hulsizer had a bases-clearing double to bring the Eagles to within one and Fain won the game for Morehead State with a two-run homer.
Freshman Christian Rosati took the loss (0-2) for the Minutemen, allowing five runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore Justin Lasko let up just two runs on nine hits over eight innings in his start with one walk and four strikeouts. Alex Gabrick retired all three batters he faced and stuck out one en route to the win (3-0) for Morehead State.
Avallone paced the Minutemen at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the contest with two walks, two RBI and two runs scored.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, April 1, with game two of the weekend series set for a 2 p.m. start.
