March 31, 2017 | Rowing

Maroon and White look to repeat last years success

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's rowing meet vs. UConn has moved to Fri., April 14 due to expected inclement weather in Western Massachusetts on Friday. The Minutewomen will still be competing this Sun., April 2 at the Doc Hosea Regatta in Camden, N.J. The regatta will be taking place on the Cooper River, home to the Ivy League Rowing Championship.

Weather Expectations
Camden, N.J. – Sunday's weather forecasts call for a beautiful day. With a high of 62 degrees and a low of just 43, it looks to be a warm day out on the river. Predictions also call for a mostly sunny day with wind gusts getting up to 11 mph.

Last Time Out: Doc Hosea Regatta
The UMass rowing team competed at the first annual Doc Hosea Regatta in Saratoga Springs, New York on Sunday. After the passing of Doctor Timothy Hosea in August 2015, the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA) decided to host an annual regatta in his memory. Dr. Hosea served as the PNRA's Board of Directors President, and guided the organization through many years of unprecedented growth under his leadership. Dr. Hosea was well liked throughout the rowing community, and his contributions to the rowing community were remembered and commemorated over the weekend.

Due to impending winter weather in Saratoga Springs, the Minutewomen began competition for the Doc Hosea Regatta on Saturday night immediately following the UConn dual regatta in Coventry, Connecticut on Saturday morning. The weekend offered Maroon and White the opportunity to race against top contenders in and out of the Atlantic 10 Conference including Syracuse, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Navy, Northeastern, Penn, Rhode Island, Cornell and Boston University. The regatta also lent UMass the chance to race against prospective NCAA contenders should the Minutewomen earn an automatic qualifier at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Northeastern and Navy competed alongside UMass in the D Final at the 2015 NCAA Championships last season.

The Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ events proved to be the most notable performances for the Minutewomen when the crews outpaced A-10 rival Rhode Island in both races despite cold conditions and high cross-tail winds. UMass bested the Rams in the Second Varsity 8+ with a time of 7:00.89 followed by Cornell at 7:05.58 and Rhode Island at 7:11.37. Kelsey Anderson coxed the lineup comprised of Krysten Menks, Sam Wonderlin, Abby Norwood, Courtney Edson, Hannah White, Pippa Edwards, Jill McGill and Estefi Marti Malvido.

The Minutewomen additionally triumphed over URI in the Varsity 4+ as well. Abigail Raichek coxed Hallie Dunlap, Rebecca Mills, Hannah McCollough and Meghan Ouellette to an 8:08.38 finish, while Rhode Island followed behind at 8:17.02. UMass also improved its performance against Rhode Island in the Varisty 8+. Last weekend the Rams' boat outpaced UMass by 15 seconds. The Minutewomen were able to close the gap down to four seconds, finishing in 6:59.77, while Rhode Island crossed the line at 6:55.14.
