Baseball Drops Pitchers’ Duel to Bucknell, 3-1

March 18, 2017 | Baseball

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Senior right-hander Mike Geannelis was perfect through five and took a no-hitter into the seventh, but Bucknell edged University of Massachusetts baseball, 3-1 on Saturday morning in the final game of the Minutemen's spring break trip to Florida. The loss leaves UMass at 4-7, while the Bison level their record at 8-8 on the year.

Junior Brett Evangelista picked up the first hit for either squad with a single in the fourth but was caught stealing.

Bucknell broke up Geannelis' perfect game in the sixth, scoring two runs without a hit. Evan Klugerman walked and Tyler Wincig was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom half of the inning and Chuckie Scales reached on an error to load the bases. Smith then reached on a fielder's choice as Klugerman was ruled safe at home to put the Bison on the board. Wincig came in for the squad's second run on a double play ball.

UMass took one of the runs back in the top of the seventh to trim its deficit to 2-1. Evangelista was hit by a pitch and moved up to third following an error and a wild pitch before freshman Nolan Kessinger drove him in with a single up the middle.

However, Bucknell pushed the lead back to two in the bottom half of the inning. Luke Johnson drew a one-out walk and scored following back-to-back singles by Mike Korchak and Evan Klugerman.

Geannelis took the loss (1-2) for the Minutemen despite limiting the Bison to three runs, two earned, on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts over seven innings. Connor Van Hoose collected the win (2-2) for Bucknell, allowing one unearned run on three hits with one walks and 12 strikeouts over 7.2 innings.

UMass will be back in action on Tuesday, March 21, when the squad is scheduled to face Holy Cross in Northborough, Massachusetts, at 5 p.m.
