Baseball Falters Against Harvard, 8-2

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – University of Massachusetts baseball put up the first two runs of the contest but was outscored 8-0 the rest of the way, falling to Harvard, 8-2 on Wednesday. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Minutemen and leaves the squad at 3-5 on the season, while the Crimson improves to 7-3.
UMass scored twice in the top of the first. Senior Jon Avallone led off the game with a single to center and freshman Nolan Kessinger followed with a double to right. A walk to sophomore Ryan Lever loaded the bases, setting up a sacrifice fly by senior Mike Geannelis and an RBI single to right by sophomore Cooper Mrowka.
However, Harvard responded with eight unanswered runs the rest of the way. Jake Allen and Quinn Hoffman reached for the Crimson with a walk and a single, respectively, in the bottom of the third and both crossed the plate on a two-out error to tie the score at 2-2.
Harvard then took the lead with a three-run fourth. Matt Rothenberg and Chad Minato opened up the frame with a double and a single and scored on a two-out, two RBI double by Allen. Ben Skinner then followed with a single to right that scored Allen to push the Crimson lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, three hits, including back-to-back doubles by Minato and John MacLean, helped Harvard increase the margin to 7-2.
Rothenberg drove in the Crimson's final run of the day with an RBI single through the left side in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Connor Donahue started on the mound for UMass and took the loss (0-1), allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over four innings. Harvard starter Hunter Bigge picked up the win (1-0), limiting the Minutemen to two runs on five hits over six innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Mrowka was the lone UMass batter to log multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Minutemen will be back in action tomorrow, March 16, opening a three-game series against Bucknell at 3 p.m. in Port Charlotte, Florida.
