Baseball Comes from Behind to Down Maine, 5-1

March 11, 2017 | Baseball

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. – University of Massachusetts baseball overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Maine, 5-1 on Saturday at Little Fenway at the Delray Invitational for the squad's first victory of the 2017 season. The win moves the Minutemen to 1-4 on the year, while the Black Bears drop to 6-7.

Maine opened the scoring in the top of the second. Christopher Bec drew a leadoff walk, stole second and crossed the plate on a two-out RBI double by Hernen Sardinas.

UMass took the run back in the bottom of the third, tying the score at 1-1. Senior Jon Avallone led off with a single to right, was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt from junior Brett Evangelista and came home on an RBI single through the right side by sophomore Ryan Lever.

The Minutemen later broke up the deadlock with four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Back-to-back one-out RBI doubles from Evangelista and Lever put UMass on top, 3-1. Walks to seniors Mike Geannelis and Dylan Morris loaded the bases and set up a two-run single for sophomore Logan Greene that increased the advantage to 5-1.

The Black Bears brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth with three straight two-out singles, but sophomore Connor Donahue ended the threat by striking out Brandon Vicens and leaving the bases loaded.

Freshman Brooks Knapek threw 7.2 innings and limited Maine to one run on six hits en route to his first collegiate win (1-1), walking four and striking out six. Donahue retired all four batters he faced to earn a save. Black Bears' starter Jonah Normandeau took the loss (0-2), surrendering four runs on six hits over 4.1 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Avallone and Lever combined for four of the Minutemen's six hits, both going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Lever and Greene had two RBI apiece.

UMass and Maine will close out their weekend series tomorrow, March 12, at 12 p.m. in Delray Beach, Florida.
