Regular-Season Finale as Women's Hoops Heads to Rhody

Minutewomen and Rams set for 7 p.m. tip at Ryan Center.
AMHERST, Mass. - It's the regular-season finale as the UMass women's basketball team heads to Rhode Island on Wednesday night. The game is set for a 7 p.m., tip at the Ryan Center with live coverage provided by the Atlantic 10 Digital Network and locally on 91.1 FM WMUA.
The Minutewomen (9-19, 3-12 A-10) are coming off a narrow loss to La Salle at home on Sunday afternoon. Prior to the game, UMass honored its senior class of Megan Burke and Alyx Stiff. The Rams are 5-22 overall and 1-14 in league play. In the Atlantic 10 standings, UMass is 13th overall while Rhody is one spot below.
In the loss to La Salle, UMass was led by Maggie Mulligan who posted her 19th double-double of the year with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Ryan Holder and Leah McDerment each had 11 points to lead the Minutewomen who cut a 13-point third-quarter deficit to just four points in the fourth quarter against the Explorers.
Earlier this season, UMass picked up a 68-67 win over the Rams at the Mullins Center on Jan. 4 led by 27 points from Hailey Leidel who was 8-of-17 from the floor with five three-pointers. Mulligan had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win followed by 14 points from Stiff. Charise Wilson led the Rams with 26 points.
Leidel continues to lead the Minutewomen in the scoring column for the year averaging 15.6 points per game. The Brownstown, Mich., native is the top rookie scorer in the Atlantic 10 and is the second overall scorer. She is the second leading rookie scorer overall in the NCAA as well. The sharp-shooter leads the A-10 in three point field goals with 71 which stands 39th nationally. She also set a new UMass rookie scoring record for a season this year with her 437 points entering Wednesday's game.
Mulligan is looking to finish the 2017 campaign on a high note as the junior is second on the team in scoring with a career-best 13.9 points per game to go with 11.2 rebounds. The Boston native is coming off back-to-back 18 point games with an average of 12 rebounds in both. She ranks ninth in the A-10 in scoring, is second in rebounding, and fifth in blocked shots. Nationally, she ranks second in double-doubles (19) and is seventh in rebounding average.
Alyx Stiff rounds out the top scorers with a career-best 10.4 points a night, while Leah McDerment's 5.2 assists per game is the third-best in the league.
Rhode Island is led by Wilson who is averaging 18.9 points per game followed by Dominique Ward (7.3 pts) and Dina Motrechuk (7.1 pts). The Rams are coming off a 71-69 home win over Duquesne last Saturday which snapped a 19-game losing streak.
At the conclusion of Wednesday night's games, the Atlantic 10 Tournament bracket will be announced. Under the new format this year, the top two teams in the league will receive a first-round bye while the No. 2-through-No. 8 teams will host the No. 9-through-No. 14 teams at campus sites.
