Late Rally Falls Short As La Salle Bests Women's Hoops 57-52

Maggie Mulligan records 18 points, 14 rebounds for 19th double-double of season.
AMHERST, Mass. - Despite cutting a 14-point third quarter deficit to just three points late in the fourth, the UMass women's basketball team was unable to continue the rally in the final minutes falling on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center to La Salle, 57-52. A 19-to-8 run for the Minutewomen cut the Explorers lead to 53-50 with 3:27 to go, but La Salle was able to hold UMass to just one more made field goal in the balance of the game.
Records:
The loss drops UMass down to 9-19 overall and 3-12 in Atlantic 10 play, while La Salle improves to 16-11 overall and 9-6 in Atlantic 10 play.

UMass Leaders:
Maggie Mulligan led the Minutewomen with 18 points and 14 rebounds for her 19th double-double of the season. Ryan Holder and Leah McDerment each scored 11 points.

La Salle Leaders:
Sofi Ngwafang led the Explorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Anemone Scheel with 13 and Lisa Mintzer with 10 points. Defensively, UMass held the Atlantic 10's leading scorer Amy Griffin to just five points after she entered the game with a 20.1 point average.
Key Plays:
• Mulligan started the game with back-to-back lay-ups giving UMass an early 4-0 lead. After the game was tied 8-8, UMass scored eight straight to take a 16-8 lead with 1:47 left in the quarter. The Explorers closed the stanza with a 6-to-2 run as UMass led 18-16 heading into the second.
• In the beginning of the second quarter, UMass and La Salle battled over the lead, but as the quarter processed, the Explorers used a 13-to-0 run to take a 33-23 lead with 3:56 to go before halftime.Â
• The first half of the third quarter began with a 8-to-2 run by La Salle as they build out the largest lead of the game, 45-31, but the Minutewomen gained momentum with six points from McDerment. Despite the brief rally of energy, the Minutewomen were unable to close the score gap, trailing 49-39 heading to the fourth.
• The fourth started with an 11-to-4 run for the Minutewomen, including a stretch of three minutes holding the Explorers scoreless, as UMass was able to cut the deficit to 53-50 on a McDerment free throw at the 3:27 mark. A three-point play by Ngwafang extended the La Salle lead back to six points to take back momentum in the final moments.

A 43-to-29 rebounding advantage for La Salle translated to a 19-to-2 edge in second chance points. Defensively, UMass held La Salle to just 3-of-14 three pointers and sent the Explorers to the free throw line just eight times.Â
Fact of the Night:
Mulligan's 14 rebounds put her over the 500 mark for her career. She now has 501 for her career alongside 581 points (388 points this year).
