Big Second Half Gives Fordham 74-43 Win Over Women's Hoops

Rams hit 10 three-pointers in second half to pull away from Minutewomen.

BRONX, N.Y. - After a close first half, Fordham used long-distance shooting in the second half to pull away from the UMass women's basketball team 74-43 on Saturday afternoon at Rose Hill Gymnasium. The Rams connected on 10-of-14 shots from beyond the arc with five in the third quarter allowing Fordham to stretch a six-point halftime lead to 20 heading into the fourth.

RECORDS:
UMass falls to 9-17 overall and 3-10 in Atlantic 10 play, while Fordham improves to 18-9 overall and 9-4 in league play.

UMASS LEADERS:
The Minutewomen were led by Ryan Holder who scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds. Maggie Mulligan added 10 points and eight rebounds.

FORDHAM LEADERS:
The Rams had four players reach double-figures in the scoring column paced by Lauren Holden and Hannah Missry who each had 17 points. G'Mrice Davis had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Kate Kreslina added 10 points. Holden and Missry each hit 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to spark Fordham's shooting efficiency in the second half.

KEY PLAYS:
  • Fordham jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes of the first half, but UMass closed the stanza on a 7-to-3 run cutting the Rams' lead to 14-9.
  • UMass kept things close in the second quarter sparked by seven points from Mulligan and six from Holder. The Minutewomen trailed just 24-21 at the 4:16 mark after Holder and Mulligan hit back-to-back buckets. Missry and Holden answered with back-to-back three-pointers but a jumper by Holder and a free throw from Mulligan in the final two minutes had UMass trailing just 30-24 going into halftime.
  • The Rams hit five three-pointers in the third quarter including another back-to-back pair from Holden and Missry to start the stanza. Eight straight points for the Rams put Fordham up 38-24 at the 6:50 mark. Fordham closed the third quarter with another 8-to-0 run extending the lead to 49-29.
  • The three-pointers kept falling for the Rams in the fourth as Fordham hit 5-of-7 and UMass was unable to close the gap in the final frame.

NUMBERS OF THE GAME:
For the game, Fordham hit 16-of-30 three pointers including 10-of-14 in the second half. Overall, the Rams converted 27-of-53 field goal attempts. UMass hit 17-of-47 shot attempts including 4-of-11 from beyond the arc.

NEXT UP:
UMass heads back on the road next Wednesday, Feb. 15 to face Richmond before returning home on Sunday, Feb. 19 to host La Salle at the Mullins Center. The contest against the Explorers will be Senior Day for the Minutewomen.
