Richmond Holds Off Women's Hoops 56-45

Maggie Mulligan posts 18th double-double of the year in loss.

RICHMOND, Va. – A key run in the second quarter opened up a tightly contested game as Richmond defeated the UMass women's basketball team 56-45 on Wednesday night at the Robins Center. An 8-to-0 run for the Spiders opened up a one-point game in the second quarter with the Minutewomen attempting to rally in the second half but coming up just short.
 
RECORDS:
UMass falls to 9-18 overall and 3-10 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond improves to 13-14 overall and 7-7 in league play. The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Mullins Center when they host La Salle for Senior Day.
 
UMASS LEADERS:
Maggie Mulligan led the Minutewomen with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 18th double-double of the season. The junior hit 8-of-13 from the floor. Hailey Leidel notched 12 points and six rebounds.
 
RICHMOND LEADERS:
Richmond was led by Jaide Hinds-Clark led the Spiders with 11 points and nine rebounds as the only Richmond player in double figures. Micaela Parson, Janelle Hubbard and Lauren Tolson each scored eight points in the win.
 
KEY MOMENTS:
  • An 8-to-0 run in the second quarter extended a one-point lead for Richmond to a 25-19 advantage.
  • In the third quarter, Richmond was able to push the lead to double-figures going up 36-23 with 7:14 remaining. A six-point run for the Minutewomen closed the gap to 38-32 with 1:00 left in the quarter.
  • UMass continued to chip away cutting the deficit to four at the 6:27 mark of the fourth after a lay-up by Mulligan and a three-pointer by Leidel. The Spiders pushed the lead back to nine, 52-43, with 2:35 remaining after back-to-back jumpers. The Minutewomen fouled to force the Spiders into the bonus, but were unable to make up any ground.
 
STAT OF THE NIGHT:
Richmond hit 22-of-58 field goals while UMass was 14-of-48 from the floor.
