Leidel posts perfect 10-of-10 showing from beyond arc in victory
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball posted a program-record 17 made three-point field goals en route to a 121-38 victory over Fisher College on Thursday night at the Mullins Center.
Hailey Leidel registered a game-high and career-high 34 points on the night, helped in part by a perfect 10-of-10 display from three-point land. That clip reset the previous UMass single-game record of seven triples by an individual player, most recently recorded during the 2015-16 season. It also tied an NCAA single-game record for consecutive three-pointers made.
Maggie Mulligan grabbed eight rebounds and Bre Hampton-Bey dished out eight of the Minutewomen's 34 assists, an additional top mark for a single game.
Leidel and Genesis Rivera had 13 points apiece in the first quarter on a combined 9-for-9 from the field. Those figures originated from a 9-2 run from the opening tip, setting the stage for the Minutewomen to take charge at both ends of the floor.
A pair of later runs aided the Minutewomen in padding their advantage, using a 19-0 sequence overlapping the first and second quarters before following that in the third period with a nearly four-minute stretch of game time in which UMass held the Falcons scoreless and increased their lead by double-digits.
The Maroon and White tallied 11 steals on the evening, paced by four from Hampton-Bey and three more by Jessica George.
As a team the Minutewomen shot an even 62 percent (49-of-79) from the floor, including a 17-of-26 (65.4 percent) night from beyond the arc. Defensively, UMass held Fisher to 13-of-57 (22.8 percent) shooting and 5-of-33 (15.2 percent) from three-point land. The Falcons were 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Massachusetts continues the home stretch of its non-conference schedule with a Sun., Dec. 10 contest against Saint Peter's University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
