Rivera and Hampton-Bey lead Minutewomen with 20-plus points
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts senior Maggie Mulligan turned in 19 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds, earning her 24th double-double, as the Minutewomen defeated Saint Peter's, 81-65, on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
Massachusetts is 7-4 following the win, while Saint Peter's drops to 3-6 on the season.
Mulligan was one of four double-digit scorers for the Minutewomen, being joined by a game-high 23 points from Genesis Rivera, plus 20 by Bre Hampton-Bey and 10 courtesy of Hailey Leidel. In addition to Hampton-Bey's scoring performance, she dished out five assists, had four steals and made 7-of-8 free throws, six of which came in the fourth quarter and were key in sealing the victory.
A very closely-contested first quarter was witness to a strong shooting effort by Saint Peter's as the Peacocks connected on six of their 13 shots. Neither team led by more than three until UMass strung together a five-point advantage in the final two and a half minutes, a stretch that followed three of the game's six ties. Mulligan closed the quarter with 10 of her 19 points.
The back-and-forth nature of the first stanza carried much into the second. Although the Minutewomen would not trail until a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Haley Dalonzo, UMass still was unable to pad its lead in excess of four. Rivera had six points in the quarter while Mulligan tallied five boards.
Rivera found her way into the box score culminating a sequence opened by Hampton-Bey with just under seven minutes left in the half. Hampton-Bey came up with a loose ball in front of press row and immediately connected with Leidel, who sent a bounce pass to Rivera for a layup. About three minutes later, Rivera grabbed a defensive board off a missed Zoe Pero jumper, drove coast-to-coast and buried a left-hand layup.
Saint Peter's would continue to battle into the second half, but after recording the game's sixth tie early in the third, the Minutewomen strung together an 8-3 run after which they never trailed. That set the stage for UMass to swell its lead to as much as 17 points late in regulation.
Talah Hughes led the Peacocks with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while Alyssa Velles logged six rebounds. As a team Saint Peter's went 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the field and 40.9 percent (9-of-22) behind the line.
UMass plays its penultimate contest of the non-conference schedule on Wed., Dec. 13, visiting in-state foe UMass Lowell. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Massachusetts.
