Hockey Falls At UConn, 8-2

December 05, 2017 | Hockey

Boeing and Plevy netted their first goals of the season in the setback for the Minutemen.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Unable to rebound from a 3-0 first period deficit, University of Massachusetts hockey dropped an 8-2 decision at UConn on Tuesday night at the XL Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 8-7-0 overall, 3-4-0 in Hockey East play, while the Huskies improve to 7-11-2, 5-7-1 in league action.

"I would have loved to see how the game would have turned out if we would have scored that goal (on Cale Makar's breakway in the first)," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I really liked our start. I thought we were really good through the first 10 minutes of the game. (Adam) Huska made some big saves and we started taking penalties and that turned the game. Tonight we just didn't get any saves. UConn was very opportunistic in their scoring and played well. It was a strange game, 8-2 is an embarrassing score, but I wasn't really embarrassed for our team. I'm glad we have another game before the semester ends. It wouldn't be fun to end the semester on that game."

UConn took a 1-0 lead shortly after a penalty on Mario Ferraro expired 9:26 into the first. Jeff Wight backhanded in a rebound from Miles Gendron and David Drake.

The Huskies then converted on their second power play of the night at the 12:25 mark. Maxim Letunov and Jonny Austin set up the Alexander Payusov tally that put UConn up by two.

The third UConn goal came just 39 seconds later. Jeff Wight added his second of the contest on a 2-on-1 from Corey Ronan and Derek Pratt.

The second period saw the Huskies add three more goals, beginning with Brian Rigali's 47 seconds into the frame. Corey Ronan scored UConn's fifth of the night at the 5:29 mark and Benjamin Freeman's tally followed at 11:31.

UMass got on the board in the third period with junior Brett Boeing's first of his UMass career, set up by classmates Kurt Keats and Ivan Chukarov at 6:21. However, the Huskies added two more in the stanza, from Letunov and Spencer Naas 4:04 and 6:54 into the period, respectively.

Junior Austin Plevy capped the scoring with his first of the season in the final minute of play, stuffing in a puck at the doorstep from freshmen George Mika and Mitchell Chaffee.

The Minutemen out-shot the Huskies 29-22 in the contest and were 0-for-4 on the power play, while UConn was 1-for-5. Sophomore Ryan Wischow, freshman Matt Murray and freshman Brad Arvanitis each played a period in net for UMass, making four, seven and three saves, respectively. Adam Huska totaled 25 stops for the Huskies before being relieved by Bradley Stone in the final 5:19 of the third.

UMass will be back in action on Sunday, December 10, when the squad will close out the first half of the 2017-18 campaign with a 5 p.m. matchup at No. 19 Union in Schenectady, New York.
