Big Third Quarter Pushes Marist Past Women’s Basketball, 88-60

December 21, 2017 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Dec. 31 at Duquesne

AMHERST, Mass. – Marist College opened the third quarter with a 19-0 run to swing momentum in favor of the visitors and never looked back as UMass women's basketball fell to the Red Foxes, 88-60, on Thursday at the Mullins Center. The setback wraps up the non-conference schedule for the Minutewomen.

UMass drops to 8-5 on the season following Thursday's game while Marist improves to 4-8.

Maggie Mulligan narrowly missed her third consecutive double-double, finishing with eight points and 12 rebounds. Genesis Rivera and Jessica George each led the Minutewomen with 13 points apiece.

It was a difficult shooting day for UMass as the Maroon and White posted a 28.8 percent effort (21-of-73) from the field in contrast to a 48.5 percent (33-of-68) showing from Marist. The Red Foxes also capitalized on all 14 of their free throw opportunities.

A very closely-contested first quarter was witness to eight lead changes as neither side led by four until Rivera converted an and-one sequence with 1:25 on the clock. Rivera sparked the UMass offense early and put down eight points in the period.

The third quarter Marist run rooted itself late in the second stanza as Massachusetts was kept off the scoreboard for the final three minutes after Paige McCormick hit a 3-pointer. The Red Foxes would string together a 7-0 run heading into the halftime break, with five of those points coming from the free throw line. From there, the visitors took control and would not relinquish their lead.

Rivera added three steals on the day for UMass while Hailey Leidel and Paige McCormick each dished out four assists. Sophomore Vashnie Perry also made her UMass debut, having arrived in Amherst as a midyear transfer from Florida Atlantic during the 2016-17 campaign.

Marist's Alana Gilmer had 20 points to lead all scorers and Rebekah Hand trailed her closely with 19 points. Maura Fitzpatrick logged seven assists.

The Minutewomen open Atlantic 10 play on New Year's Eve, Sun., Dec. 31, visiting Duquesne for a 1 p.m. rendezvous in Pittsburgh.
